New York State Canal System

A network of navigable canals in New York, including the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga–Seneca canals, that connects the Hudson River, Great Lakes, and inland waterways.

Champlain Canal: A canal connecting the Hudson River with Lake Champlain in northeastern New York. It extends the system northward from the Hudson toward Lake Champlain.
DeWitt Clinton: A New York politician who championed construction of the Erie Canal and served as governor during its opening. His political leadership helped secure support for the canal project that anchored the network.
Canal boat: A vessel designed or adapted to carry people or cargo through canals. Canal boats have carried the freight and passengers for which the network was built.
New York City: The largest city in the United States, located at the mouth of the Hudson River. Canal traffic strengthened the city’s commercial links to the Great Lakes and interior.
Rail transport: The movement of passengers or goods by vehicles running on railway tracks. Railways competed with canals by offering faster, more direct overland freight and passenger service.
Oswego Canal: A canal connecting the Erie Canal at Syracuse with Lake Ontario at Oswego. It carries the Erie route north to Lake Ontario.
Erie Canal: A New York canal connecting the Hudson River at Albany with Lake Erie at Buffalo. Its construction began the network’s transformation into a statewide canal system.
Inland waterway: A navigable river, lake, or canal located within a landmass rather than along its coast. The state canals function as connected routes within a broader inland navigation system.
Buffalo, New York: A city at the eastern end of Lake Erie in western New York. The Erie Canal’s western terminus helped Buffalo grow into a major lake port.
Hudson River: A river in eastern New York flowing south from the Adirondacks to New York Harbor. The canal system used the Hudson as its Atlantic outlet rather than replacing river navigation.
