New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange is a securities exchange in New York City where listed stocks and other securities are traded. It is operated by NYSE Group, a subsidiary of Intercontinental Exchange.

Designated Market Maker: A NYSE member firm responsible for maintaining fair and orderly trading in assigned listed securities. Designated Market Makers support orderly trading in the NYSE’s assigned stocks.
Buttonwood Agreement: A 1792 agreement among New York brokers to trade securities with one another under shared rules. The agreement is conventionally treated as the NYSE’s founding moment.
NYSE listing requirements: Standards that companies must meet to list and remain listed on the New York Stock Exchange. These standards determine which companies can trade on the exchange.
NASDAQ: A U.S. electronic stock exchange operated by Nasdaq, Inc. NASDAQ is the NYSE’s major U.S. exchange rival and has no traditional trading floor.
NYSE trading floor: The physical trading floor at 11 Wall Street in New York City, where some NYSE trading activity occurs. It remains part of the exchange’s hybrid trading system.
Wall Street: A street in Lower Manhattan that became the center of U.S. financial markets. The exchange’s home helped make Wall Street a symbol of American finance.
Initial public offering: A company’s first sale of shares to public investors on a stock market. Companies may list on the NYSE when they go public.
NYSE American: A U.S. stock exchange operated by NYSE Group, historically associated with smaller and emerging companies. It is a separate NYSE Group exchange with a different market focus.
Electronic trading: The execution of financial transactions through computer systems rather than direct in-person negotiation. Electronic orders are a central part of how NYSE securities trade.
New York Stock & Exchange Board: The organization formed by New York brokers in 1817 that preceded the New York Stock Exchange. It formalized the broker association that developed from the Buttonwood Agreement.
