Ngawang Namgyal

Ngawang Namgyal was a Tibetan Buddhist lama who unified Bhutan in the 17th century and established its dual system of religious and civil government.

Zhabdrung: A title for Bhutan’s supreme religious and political leader, first held by Ngawang Namgyal. The title embodied the authority he established over Bhutan.
Tsa Yig: A code of law and governance used in Bhutan, traditionally attributed to Ngawang Namgyal. It provided legal principles for the state he organized.
Drukpa Lineage: A Tibetan Buddhist lineage founded by Tsangpa Gyare in the 12th century. Ngawang Namgyal belonged to this lineage and inherited its religious authority.
Simtokha Dzong: A fortress-monastery near Thimphu, traditionally regarded as Bhutan’s oldest dzong. Built under Ngawang Namgyal, it became an early administrative and religious stronghold.
Tsangyang Gyatso: The sixth Dalai Lama, born in 1683 and recognized in 1697. His recognition came after Ngawang Namgyal’s death, amid changing Tibetan-Bhutanese relations.
Drukpa Kagyu: A school of Tibetan Buddhism that became Bhutan’s dominant religious tradition. Ngawang Namgyal established Drukpa Kagyu as the state’s religious tradition.
Desi: The civil ruler in Bhutan’s traditional dual system of government. The office handled civil administration under the system he established.
Pema Karpo: A prominent Drukpa Kagyu master whose reincarnation became central to a succession dispute after his death. Competing claims to his reincarnation shaped Ngawang Namgyal’s departure from Tibet.
Paro Taktsang: A Buddhist monastery built on a cliff above the Paro Valley in Bhutan. Its sacred landscape formed part of the religious world in which he ruled.
Tenzin Rabgye: A Bhutanese leader who served as Desi in the late 17th century and promoted religious and cultural projects. He governed after Ngawang Namgyal and helped sustain the new institutions.
