Ngô dynasty

The Ngô dynasty ruled Vietnam from 939 to 965 after Ngô Quyền defeated the Southern Han and established an independent court at Cổ Loa.

Ngô Quyền: A Vietnamese military leader who defeated the Southern Han at the Bạch Đằng River in 938 and founded the Ngô dynasty. His victory and accession established the dynasty in 939.
Cổ Loa: An ancient Vietnamese citadel and settlement north of present-day Hanoi, associated with early Vietnamese states. Ngô Quyền established his court here after defeating the Southern Han.
Đại Việt: A historical name for Vietnam used by several Vietnamese dynasties, beginning in the tenth century. The Ngô period helped establish the independent polity later known by this name.
Third Chinese domination of Vietnam: A period of Chinese rule over northern Vietnam, conventionally dated from 602 to 938. The Ngô dynasty replaced the political order that this period represented.
Battle of Bạch Đằng (938): A 938 naval battle in which Ngô Quyền’s forces defeated the Southern Han fleet on Vietnam’s Bạch Đằng River. The victory cleared the way for Ngô Quyền to establish independent rule.

Southern Han: A Chinese kingdom in southern China that existed from 917 to 971. Its attempted invasion in 938 was defeated by Ngô Quyền.
Ngô Xương Ngập: A son of Ngô Quyền who returned from exile and ruled jointly with his younger brother Ngô Xương Văn. His return created a divided kingship within the Ngô court.
