Ngô Quyền

Ngô Quyền was a Vietnamese military leader who defeated the Southern Han at the Battle of Bạch Đằng in 938 and became king in 939.

Battle of Bạch Đằng (938): A 938 naval battle in which Vietnamese forces defeated the Southern Han on the Bạch Đằng River. Ngô Quyền’s victory here broke Southern Han intervention and established his military reputation.
Bạch Đằng River: A river in northeastern Vietnam that flows through a tidal estuary into the Gulf of Tonkin. Its tides and narrow channels shaped Ngô Quyền’s ambush plan.
Chinese rule in Vietnam: Periods when Chinese dynasties governed territories in what is now northern and central Vietnam. Ngô Quyền’s victory ended a long phase of Chinese political domination.
