Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A protected area in northern Tanzania that combines wildlife conservation, pastoral livelihoods, and archaeological heritage across volcanic highlands and savanna.

Ngorongoro Crater: A large volcanic caldera in northern Tanzania, forming the centerpiece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Its enclosed grasslands and permanent water support a dense, year-round concentration of wildlife.
Multiple-use protected area: A protected landscape managed to conserve nature while permitting specified human activities. Ngorongoro’s legal model combines conservation with resident settlement and livestock grazing.
Great Rift Valley: A vast tectonic rift system extending through eastern Africa, formed as Earth’s crust pulls apart. The area’s volcanic highlands and landforms belong to this active rift system.
