Nguni languages

The Nguni languages are a closely related group of Southern Bantu languages that includes isiZulu, isiXhosa, siSwati, and isiNdebele. They share substantial linguistic features while remaining distinct languages.

Bantu languages: A major branch of the Niger–Congo language family spoken across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Nguni languages belong to this broader branch of African languages.
isiZulu: A Nguni language spoken chiefly in South Africa, where it is one of the country’s official languages. It is the largest Nguni language by number of speakers.
Nguni migrations: Historical movements of Nguni-speaking communities across southeastern Africa. These movements help explain the group’s present geographic spread.
Zulu language: The standardized language commonly called isiZulu, one member of the Nguni group. “Zulu” names one language, not the entire Nguni group.
Niger–Congo languages: A large language family whose members are spoken across most of sub-Saharan Africa. The family classification places Nguni within the continent’s largest language grouping.
isiXhosa: A Nguni language spoken chiefly in South Africa and recognized as one of its official languages. Its widespread use and distinctive click consonants make it a major Nguni language.
Proto-Nguni: The reconstructed ancestral language from which the Nguni languages developed. Comparison among modern Nguni languages helps linguists infer this shared ancestor.
Xhosa language: The standardized language commonly called isiXhosa, one member of the Nguni group. “Xhosa” is often mistaken for a collective name, but it denotes one Nguni language.
Noun class: A grammatical system that groups nouns and marks their categories through agreement on related words. Nguni languages use noun classes to shape agreement across phrases and sentences.
siSwati: A Nguni language spoken principally in Eswatini and South Africa, and an official language in both countries. It shows how Nguni languages cross present-day national borders.
