Nian Rebellion

An armed uprising in northern China from 1851 to 1868, fought by mobile rebel groups against the Qing dynasty. Its forces relied on cavalry, rapid movement, and shifting alliances.

Nian Army: The loose coalition of rebel bands that fought Qing forces during the Nian Rebellion. Its decentralized organization and mobility shaped the rebellion’s distinctive campaigns.
Yellow River: A major river of northern China whose floods and course changes repeatedly affected surrounding populations. Flooding and river-management failures helped destabilize communities in the Nian’s core region.

Tongzhi Restoration: A period of Qing recovery and administrative reform in the 1860s and 1870s under the Tongzhi Emperor. The Nian’s suppression formed part of the military recovery associated with this period.
Qing Green Standard Army: A Qing dynasty force composed mainly of Han Chinese soldiers, used for policing and regional military operations. Its limited effectiveness against mobile Nian forces contributed to Qing reliance on other armies.
Huai River: A major river system in central-eastern China, between the Yellow and Yangtze river basins. Nian operations centered in the flood-prone region between the Huai and Yellow rivers.
