Nicaragua Canal

The Nicaragua Canal is a proposed waterway across Nicaragua linking the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, with Lake Nicaragua forming part of its route. Its largest modern proposal was a Chinese-backed project announced in 2013.

Lake Nicaragua: The largest freshwater lake in Central America, located in southwestern Nicaragua. The proposed canal would use the lake as a central stretch of its passage.
Spanish colonization of Nicaragua: The period of Spanish rule over Nicaragua, beginning in the sixteenth century and ending with independence in 1821. Colonial authorities considered an interoceanic passage through Nicaragua for trade and transport.
Wang Jing: A Chinese businessman who founded the telecommunications company Xinwei and led the Nicaragua canal concessionaire. He became the public face and principal private backer of the modern project.
Lake Nicaragua water security: The protection and sustainable use of Lake Nicaragua as a freshwater resource. Canal excavation and operation raised concerns about the lake’s drinking-water and ecological functions.
San Juan River: A river flowing from Lake Nicaragua eastward to the Caribbean Sea. The proposed route could use its channel to reach the Caribbean coast.
Royal Road of the Isthmus: A colonial-era route across Nicaragua that linked the Pacific coast with the San Juan River and Caribbean transport. It carried people and goods along parts of the corridor later proposed for a canal.
HKND Group: A Hong Kong–registered company created to develop the proposed Nicaragua Canal. It held the concession and presented the project’s route and construction plans.
Nicaragua Canal protests: Demonstrations opposing the proposed canal, especially over land expropriation and environmental risks. Protests made the project’s social costs and lack of local consent central public issues.
Britto River: A river in southwestern Nicaragua that flows into the Pacific Ocean. The proposed western approach would connect the canal to the Pacific near its mouth.
Cornelius Vanderbilt: An American industrialist who built a major shipping and transit business in the nineteenth century. His Accessory Transit Company carried passengers across Nicaragua during the California Gold Rush.
