Nicene Christianity

Nicene Christianity is the Christian tradition defined by the creed adopted at the Council of Nicaea in 325 and developed by later ecumenical councils. It confesses the Son as fully divine and, in its developed form, the Holy Spirit as fully divine.

Nicene Creed: A Christian profession of faith originating at Nicaea in 325 and expanded at Constantinople in 381. This creed supplies the defining confession of Nicene Christianity.
Council of Nicaea: A gathering of Christian bishops convened by Emperor Constantine in 325 to address disputes including the status of the Son. It produced the creed that gives Nicene Christianity its name.
Nontrinitarianism: Christian beliefs that reject or substantially revise the doctrine of the Trinity. These traditions do not share Nicene Christianity’s Trinitarian confession.
Eastern Orthodox Church: A communion of self-governing churches that shares the faith and sacramental tradition of Eastern Christianity. It confesses the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed without the Western Filioque addition.
Homoian controversy: A fourth-century dispute in which Homoian Christians rejected defining the Son’s relation to the Father as “same substance.” Its competing formulas show how imperial and theological debate persisted after Nicaea.
Trinity: The Christian doctrine that God is one being in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Nicene belief frames the Son and Spirit’s divinity within this account of God.
First Council of Constantinople: An ecumenical council held in 381 that reaffirmed Nicaea and clarified teaching about the Holy Spirit. Its creed shaped the form of Nicene confession widely used today.
Jehovah’s Witnesses: A Christian restorationist movement that rejects the Trinity and teaches that Jesus is not Almighty God. Its Christology directly differs from the creed’s claim that the Son is fully divine.
Roman Catholic Church: The worldwide Christian church in communion with the bishop of Rome. Its worship and teaching affirm the creed, including the Western Filioque wording.
Chalcedonian Definition: A statement adopted at Chalcedon in 451 describing Christ as one person in two natures, divine and human. It developed the Christological framework within which many Nicene churches understand Jesus.
