Nicholas I of Russia

Nicholas I was emperor of Russia from 1825 to 1855. His reign strengthened autocratic rule, suppressed the Decembrist revolt, and ended amid Russia’s defeat in the Crimean War.

Decembrist revolt: An uprising by Russian officers in December 1825 opposing Nicholas I’s accession and advocating political reform. Its suppression at the start of his reign set a punitive tone toward political opposition.
Orthodoxy, Autocracy, and Nationality: An official ideological formula under Nicholas I emphasizing Russian Orthodoxy, imperial authority, and national identity. It supplied the regime’s clearest statement of political and cultural loyalty.
