Nicholas of Cusa

Nicholas of Cusa (1401–1464) was a German cardinal, philosopher, theologian, mathematician, and church reformer. His idea of learned ignorance holds that recognizing the limits of human knowledge opens the way to understanding.

Learned ignorance: The recognition that finite human understanding cannot fully grasp infinite truth. This principle gives its name to his best-known philosophical work and method.
Maximum and minimum: The greatest and least values considered as limits in mathematical or philosophical reasoning. Cusa argues that in the absolute maximum, maximum and minimum coincide.
Pope Eugenius IV: Pope from 1431 to 1447, whose pontificate was marked by conflict with the Council of Basel. Cusa became a prominent defender of Eugenius during the council's struggle over authority.
Council of Basel: A church council held from 1431 to 1449 that contested the balance of authority between councils and the pope. Cusa's defense of conciliar reform there shaped his early political and ecclesiastical career.
Geocentrism: The cosmological model that places Earth at or near the center of the universe. Cusa questioned a fixed cosmic center, challenging assumptions associated with geocentric order.
Coincidence of opposites: The idea that apparently opposing things coincide in an absolute unity beyond ordinary reasoning. Cusa uses it to describe how finite distinctions fail before the infinite.
Squaring the circle: The problem of constructing a square equal in area to a given circle using only compass and straightedge. Cusa's unsuccessful attempts reveal how mathematical approximation can prompt metaphysical reflection.
Pope Pius II: The pope from 1458 to 1464, born Enea Silvio Piccolomini, and a humanist author and diplomat. As pope, he appointed Cusa cardinal and entrusted him with ecclesiastical responsibilities.
De concordantia catholica: Cusa's 1433 treatise arguing for church unity and reform through concord among ecclesiastical and political authorities. It sets out his early case for reform and the authority of church councils.
Cosmological principle: The modern assumption that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic on sufficiently large scales. It offers a later framework for comparing Cusa's decentered cosmos with modern cosmology.
