Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot

Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot (1796–1832) was a French physicist and military engineer whose analysis of ideal heat engines helped establish the foundations of thermodynamics.

Carnot cycle: An ideal reversible cycle of isothermal and adiabatic processes operating between two heat reservoirs. It formalizes the engine cycle Carnot used to compare the maximum efficiencies of heat engines.
Heat engine: A device that converts heat from a hot source into mechanical work while transferring some heat to a cooler sink. Carnot analyzed the general limits applying to these devices.
