Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille

Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille (1713–1762) was a French astronomer who surveyed the southern sky from the Cape of Good Hope and introduced 14 constellations still recognized today.

Coelum Australe Stelliferum: A 1763 star atlas presenting Lacaille’s southern-sky observations and constellation figures. It published the observations and star patterns from his Cape survey.
Transit instrument: A telescope mounted to measure when celestial objects cross a fixed meridian. Meridian timings helped Lacaille determine precise star positions.
Paris Observatory: A French astronomical institution founded in 1667 for systematic observation and research. Lacaille’s early work and scientific standing developed within its institutional world.
International Astronomical Union: An international organization that coordinates astronomical nomenclature and defines official constellations. Its standard constellation list retains the 14 figures Lacaille introduced.
Lacaille 8760: A nearby red dwarf star in the constellation Microscopium, named for Lacaille. Its name preserves Lacaille’s legacy in a southern constellation he introduced.
