Nicolaus Copernicus

Nicolaus Copernicus was a Renaissance astronomer whose heliocentric model placed Earth and the other planets in motion around a central Sun. His work reshaped European astronomy and challenged the longstanding geocentric system.

Heliocentrism: A family of models that places the Sun at or near the center of the planetary system. Copernicus’s system became the best-known early modern version of this broader astronomical idea.
Ptolemaic system: The geocentric astronomical system developed from Ptolemy’s work, using circles and mathematical devices to predict celestial positions. It was the dominant mathematical framework that Copernicus sought to reform.
Rheticus: A German mathematician and astronomer who became Copernicus’s student and helped publish his work. He persuaded Copernicus to publish and produced the first printed account of the heliocentric theory.
Copernican Revolution: The transformation of European astronomy and natural philosophy associated with the shift from geocentric to heliocentric models. Copernicus’s proposal gave this long intellectual change its name and a foundational starting point.
Stellar parallax: The apparent annual shift in nearby stars’ positions caused by Earth’s motion around the Sun. Its absence from Renaissance observations was a major objection to a moving Earth.
De revolutionibus orbium coelestium: Copernicus’s 1543 book presenting a mathematical model of a Sun-centered planetary system. It sets out the structure and calculations of his proposed system.
Aristarchus of Samos: An ancient Greek astronomer who proposed that Earth rotates and revolves around the Sun. His surviving heliocentric proposal preceded Copernicus by many centuries.
Andreas Osiander: A Lutheran theologian who oversaw the printing of Copernicus’s major work in 1543. His unsigned preface presented the system as a mathematical hypothesis, complicating how the book was received.
Galileo affair: The conflict between Galileo and the Roman Catholic Church over heliocentrism, culminating in his 1633 trial and condemnation. The controversy shows how Copernican cosmology became entangled with religious authority.
Copernican system: Copernicus’s mathematical arrangement of the planets around the Sun, retaining circular motions and epicycles. Its geometry clarified planetary ordering but did not yet match observations as accurately as later models.
