Nie Rongzhen

Nie Rongzhen (1899–1992) was a Chinese Communist military leader and marshal who helped found the People’s Republic of China and later directed its nuclear weapons program.

Zhu De: A Chinese Communist military leader and marshal who commanded major forces during the Chinese Civil War. He and Nie were senior commanders in the revolutionary armed forces and the People’s Liberation Army.
People's Liberation Army: The armed forces of the People’s Republic of China, established in 1927 as the Red Army. Nie held senior command posts as the revolutionary army became the state’s armed forces.
Work-Study Movement in France: A program that brought Chinese students to France for study and industrial work in the early twentieth century. Nie studied in France during the movement, where he joined revolutionary politics.
People's Republic of China: A sovereign state established in 1949 that governs mainland China. Nie helped establish the state and served in its military and scientific leadership.
Liu Bocheng: A Chinese Communist military commander and marshal who helped lead the People’s Liberation Army. Like Nie, he became a marshal and held senior command during the revolution and state-building.
Chinese Civil War: The conflict between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalists that ended with Communist victory in 1949. Nie’s battlefield commands contributed to the Communist victory that brought the new state into being.
Chinese Communist Party: A political party founded in 1921 that established and governs the People’s Republic of China. Nie’s military and state roles grew from his lifelong membership in the party.
China's First Atomic Bomb: China’s first nuclear weapon, detonated at the Lop Nur test site on 16 October 1964. Its development was a major outcome of the defense-science program Nie directed.
Mao Zedong: A Chinese Communist revolutionary who led the People’s Republic of China from its founding until 1976. Nie served the party and state Mao led, including in military and scientific institutions.
Central Military Commission: The Chinese Communist Party body that directs the country’s armed forces. Nie’s senior military roles placed him within the institutions coordinating China’s defense.
