Niels Bohr

Niels Bohr was a Danish physicist whose model of the atom introduced quantized electron states and whose work shaped quantum mechanics and its interpretation.

Bohr model: An early atomic model in which electrons occupy quantized orbits around a nucleus and emit or absorb light when changing orbits. Bohr’s 1913 model made quantized electron states central to atomic theory.
Copenhagen interpretation: A family of interpretations of quantum mechanics emphasizing probabilities, measurement, and limits on classical description. Bohr’s complementarity and account of measurement became central to this influential interpretation.
Ernest Rutherford: A New Zealand-born physicist who established the nuclear model of the atom through experiments on alpha-particle scattering. Rutherford’s nuclear atom was the starting point for Bohr’s 1913 model.
Copenhagen: The capital of Denmark and a major center of Scandinavian science and culture. Bohr’s research and institute-building were based in Copenhagen.
Quantum measurement problem: The problem of explaining how definite measurement outcomes arise from quantum states that allow multiple outcomes. Bohr’s emphasis on measurement sharpened, but did not settle, this foundational problem.
Planck constant: The fundamental constant that sets the scale of quantum effects and relates a photon’s energy to its frequency. Bohr used Planck’s quantum of action to set allowed atomic energies.
Complementarity: The principle that certain descriptions of a quantum system are mutually exclusive yet jointly necessary for a complete account. Bohr developed complementarity to explain why wave and particle descriptions both matter.
Werner Heisenberg: A German theoretical physicist who formulated matrix mechanics and the uncertainty principle. Heisenberg worked with Bohr in Copenhagen and developed a distinct formulation of quantum mechanics.
University of Copenhagen: A Danish public university founded in 1479 and the country’s oldest university. Bohr studied and began his academic career at the university.
EPR paradox: A 1935 argument that quantum mechanics is incomplete because entangled systems appear to permit nonlocal correlations. Einstein and collaborators framed this challenge against the kind of quantum account Bohr defended.
