Nihon Shoki

Nihon Shoki is a Japanese court chronicle completed in 720. It narrates the origins of Japan, the imperial line, and events through the early eighth century.

Kojiki: A Japanese chronicle completed in 712 that records creation myths, genealogies, and early imperial history. Its earlier compilation shares origin narratives but differs in organization and historical emphasis.
Imperial House of Japan: The hereditary dynasty traditionally headed by Japan’s emperor. The chronicle organizes much of its narrative around the dynasty’s genealogy and succession.
Emperor Tenmu: A Japanese emperor who reigned from 673 to 686 and initiated projects to preserve court histories. He is traditionally credited with ordering the collection of historical traditions that informed the chronicle.
National history of Japan: The historical narrative of Japan’s political and social development across time. The chronicle became a foundational source for later accounts of early Japanese history.
Japanese mythology: The body of myths and sacred narratives associated with Japan, including accounts of creation and kami. Its creation stories provide the mythic foundation for the chronicle’s account of the realm.
Japanese era name: A Japanese calendar designation identifying a period by an official reign name. Its dated entries use reign-based chronology to order events and connect them to emperors.
Empress Genmei: A Japanese ruler who reigned from 707 to 715 during the compilation of early court histories. Her court oversaw the project that produced the Nihon Shoki.
Jinnō Shōtōki: A fourteenth-century Japanese political text tracing imperial descent and defending the legitimacy of the imperial line. It drew on court chronicles to construct a later account of continuous imperial rule.
Yamato court: The early Japanese ruling court centered in the Yamato region, from which the imperial state developed. The court commissioned the chronicle to articulate the authority and history of its ruling house.
Genealogy: The study or recorded tracing of descent and family relationships. Genealogical sequences link legendary ancestry to the chronicle’s account of imperial succession.
