Nikolai Luzin

Nikolai Luzin (1883–1950) was a Russian mathematician who founded the Moscow school of descriptive set theory and real analysis. His work and teaching shaped Soviet mathematics, while the 1936 Luzin Affair exposed political pressures on scholars.

Pavel Alexandrov: A Soviet mathematician who helped establish modern topology and became a leading member of the Moscow mathematical community. Alexandrov was Luzin’s student and a central figure in the school Luzin founded.
Descriptive set theory: The study of definable sets, especially subsets of Polish spaces, and their structural properties. Luzin founded the Moscow school that made this field a major area of research.

Analytic set: A continuous image of a Polish space, equivalently a projection of a Borel set in a suitable product space. Luzin and Suslin established the theory of these sets and their relation to Borel sets.
