Nikolay Pirogov

Nikolay Pirogov was a Russian surgeon, anatomist, and educator who advanced surgical anatomy, anesthesia, battlefield care, and medical education in the 19th century.

Triage: The sorting of patients by urgency and likely benefit when medical resources are limited. Pirogov organized wounded soldiers by treatment priority during the Crimean War.
Topographic anatomy: The study of the locations and relationships of structures within specific regions of the body. Pirogov’s surgical atlases mapped anatomy in layers to guide operations.
