Nile basin

The drainage area whose rivers, lakes, and rainfall ultimately feed the Nile system. It spans parts of northeastern and eastern Africa and includes the river’s headwaters, tributaries, and main channel.

Nile: The major northeastern African river formed by the White Nile and Blue Nile, flowing north to the Mediterranean Sea. The basin is defined by the land and waters that feed this river system.
Nile flood: The annual rise of the Nile, historically driven largely by summer rains in the Ethiopian Highlands. The Blue Nile and Atbara transmit much of this seasonal pulse downstream.
Nile Basin Initiative: A regional partnership launched in 1999 to promote cooperation among Nile Basin countries. It provides a basin-wide forum for dialogue over shared water resources.
Nile Basin Discourse: A civil-society network that promotes public participation in Nile Basin water management. It connects local communities and organizations to basin-wide policy discussions.
Nile perch: A large predatory freshwater fish native to the Nile and other African river and lake systems. Its introduction to Lake Victoria transformed fisheries and contributed to major ecological changes.
White Nile: The Nile’s longer headstream, rising in the Great Lakes region and flowing north toward Sudan. Its lakes and tributaries drain much of the basin’s southern and western reaches.
Ethiopian Highlands: A high plateau region in Ethiopia that supplies headwaters to several major African rivers. Summer monsoon rains here generate much of the basin’s variable runoff and sediment.
Nile Waters Agreement of 1959: An agreement between Egypt and Sudan allocating Nile water and providing for joint management. Its allocations shaped downstream water relations while excluding upstream states from negotiations.
Nile irrigation: The use of Nile water to supply crops in the basin, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Irrigation is a major source of water demand throughout the basin.
Lake Victoria fisheries: Commercial and subsistence fishing industries operating on Lake Victoria and its shores. They depend on basin waters and have been reshaped by ecological and economic change.
