NIMBY

NIMBY describes opposition to a development or facility near one’s home, especially when opponents support the same kind of project elsewhere.

Externality: An externality is a cost or benefit of an activity borne by people outside the transaction that produces it. Nearby projects can impose noise, traffic, or perceived risks on neighbors who receive few direct benefits.
YIMBY: YIMBY is support for building housing or other development, often in places where local opposition has constrained supply. It names a contrasting stance that favors local development rather than resisting it.
Housing supply: Housing supply is the stock of homes available in a market and the rate at which additional homes are built. Resistance to apartments or denser zoning can restrict new homes near jobs and transit.
Housing affordability: Housing affordability describes whether households can obtain suitable housing without excessive financial strain. Blocking construction in high-demand areas can intensify scarcity and raise housing costs.
NIMBY (1980s usage): NIMBY is an acronym popularized in the 1980s for opposition to locally sited projects. The phrase’s rise gave a compact name to recurring conflicts over unwanted facilities.
Collective action problem: A collective action problem arises when people pursuing individual interests struggle to produce a shared benefit. Residents can coordinate to block a project even when its broader benefits are widely shared.
NIABY: NIABY is opposition to a project because it is considered unsuitable anywhere, not merely near a particular community. It distinguishes site-specific resistance from rejection of the project in every location.
Wind power: Wind power is electricity generated by converting the kinetic energy of moving air. Proposed turbines can trigger local disputes over landscape, noise, wildlife, and energy benefits.
Urban sprawl: Urban sprawl is the outward expansion of low-density development across formerly rural or undeveloped land. Restrictions on building within cities can push growth toward more distant, car-dependent locations.
Land-use planning: Land-use planning is the regulation and organization of how land may be developed and used. Zoning and permitting systems provide the institutional setting for many NIMBY disputes.
