Nimrod Expedition

The 1907–1909 British Antarctic expedition led by Ernest Shackleton, which reached 97 nautical miles of the South Pole and made major scientific discoveries.

South Pole: The southernmost point on Earth, at 90° south latitude. Shackleton’s southern party came within 97 nautical miles of this goal before turning back.
Ross Ice Shelf: A vast floating ice shelf extending into the Ross Sea from Antarctica. The expedition established its base on the shelf and used it as the starting point for inland journeys.
Ernest Shackleton: An Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer who led the Nimrod Expedition and later commanded the Endurance Expedition. He organized the expedition and led its southern party toward the Pole.
