Niobrara Formation

The Niobrara Formation is a Late Cretaceous sequence of chalk and limestone deposited in the Western Interior Seaway of central North America. It is renowned for exceptionally preserved marine fossils, including fishes and reptiles.

Western Interior Seaway: A Cretaceous inland sea that divided North America into eastern and western landmasses. Its waters covered the region where the Niobrara sediments accumulated.
Carbonate sedimentation: The accumulation of calcium-carbonate particles or shells that can form limestone. Marine carbonate production supplied material for the formation’s chalk and limestone.
Fossil Lake: A fossil-rich locality in Kansas known for Cretaceous marine fossils from the Niobrara Formation. It is among the best-known sites yielding abundant Niobrara marine vertebrates.
Niobrara oil play: A petroleum-producing region in the Denver Basin associated with organic-rich Cretaceous rocks, including the Niobrara Formation. Hydrocarbons generated or stored in Niobrara rocks support extensive drilling.
Greenhorn Limestone: A Cretaceous marine limestone unit beneath the Niobrara Formation in parts of the Western Interior. It represents an older phase of marine deposition in the same broad seaway.
Chalk: A soft, fine-grained limestone composed mainly of microscopic marine organisms’ calcium-carbonate remains. Chalk forms much of the formation and reflects abundant marine plankton.
Anoxic event: A period when oxygen levels in a body of water or its sediments become unusually low. Low-oxygen conditions helped preserve organic matter in some Niobrara deposits.
Kansas Chalk: A belt of Cretaceous chalk exposed across central and western Kansas, largely belonging to the Niobrara Formation. Its outcrops make the formation accessible and give the state its chalk-landscape heritage.
Hydraulic fracturing: A method that injects pressurized fluid into rock to create fractures that improve fluid flow. Operators use it to produce oil and gas from tight Niobrara rock.
Pierre Shale: A thick Late Cretaceous marine shale unit that overlies the Niobrara Formation in parts of the Great Plains. Its finer, shale-dominated deposits contrast with the Niobrara’s abundant chalk and limestone.
