Nishiki-e

Nishiki-e is a Japanese multicolour woodblock print made by printing separate carved blocks for different colors. The technique developed in the 18th century and enabled richly colored, repeatable designs.

Woodblock printing in Japan: A relief-printing tradition in which carved wooden blocks transfer images onto paper in Japan. Nishiki-e expanded this established printing method by assigning different colors to separate blocks.
Benizuri-e: An early Japanese multicolor woodblock-print format that typically used a limited palette of two or three colors. It preceded Nishiki-e's more extensive palette and block-by-block color printing.
Japanese paper: Paper made in Japan from plant fibers, including kozo, mitsumata, and gampi. Its strength and absorbency suited repeated printing with water-based pigments.
Kabuki: A Japanese theater form known for stylized acting, elaborate costumes, and dramatic stage effects. Nishiki-e prints publicized productions and depicted celebrated actors.
Andō Hiroshige: A nineteenth-century Japanese ukiyo-e artist known for landscape prints and series such as The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. His color landscapes show Nishiki-e's capacity to make place and atmosphere widely reproducible.
Key block: The carved block that prints the principal outlines and anchors the image's design. Its outlines guided the carving and placement of Nishiki-e's color blocks.
Suzuki Harunobu: An eighteenth-century Japanese ukiyo-e artist associated with the development of full-color prints. Harunobu's prints helped establish Nishiki-e as a refined and popular format.
Water-based ink: Ink or pigment dispersed in water and applied to a printing surface. Water-based color produced the soft gradations and varied surfaces found in Nishiki-e.
Yakusha-e: Ukiyo-e prints depicting kabuki actors, roles, and theatrical scenes. Actor portraits were among the most visible subjects printed in color.
Katsushika Hokusai: A Japanese artist and printmaker whose best-known works include Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. His celebrated landscape series used multicolor woodblock printing to reach broad audiences.
