Nitrobenzene

Nitrobenzene is an aromatic organic compound with formula C₆H₅NO₂, consisting of a benzene ring bonded to a nitro group. It is a pale yellow, oily liquid with an almond-like odor.

Electrophilic aromatic substitution: A family of reactions in which an electrophile replaces a hydrogen on an aromatic ring. The nitro group deactivates the ring and directs incoming electrophiles mainly to the meta position.
Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate: An industrial diisocyanate used to make polyurethane materials. Nitrobenzene can enter production routes that ultimately supply aniline for this polyurethane precursor.
Eilhard Mitscherlich: A German chemist known for work on isomorphism and aromatic compounds. Mitscherlich prepared nitrobenzene in 1834 by treating benzene with fuming nitric acid.
Nitrobenzene poisoning: Toxic effects caused by exposure to nitrobenzene, including impaired oxygen transport in blood. Nitrobenzene exposure can cause methemoglobinemia and damage the nervous system and organs.
Nitro group: A functional group composed of one nitrogen and two oxygen atoms, written –NO₂. Its strongly electron-withdrawing bonding gives nitrobenzene its distinctive ring effects.
Paracetamol: An analgesic and fever-reducing medicine also known as acetaminophen. Some manufacturing routes use nitrobenzene-derived aniline as an intermediate.
Nitration: A chemical reaction that introduces a nitro group into an organic molecule. The classic preparation of nitrobenzene is the nitration of benzene.
Methemoglobinemia: A disorder in which oxidized hemoglobin cannot transport oxygen effectively. Nitrobenzene metabolites can oxidize hemoglobin and produce this life-threatening condition.
Resonance: A way to represent electron delocalization using multiple contributing structures for one molecule. Resonance accounts for electron withdrawal from the ring and the meta-directing effect.
Rubber chemicals: Substances added to rubber formulations to control processing, durability, or performance. Aniline made from nitrobenzene is a feedstock for several rubber-processing chemicals.
