Nixon Doctrine

A U.S. foreign-policy principle announced in 1969 that allies should provide most of their own military manpower, while the United States supplied support and protection.

Guam Doctrine: A 1969 statement by President Richard Nixon outlining reduced reliance on U.S. ground forces in Asian conflicts. Nixon first set out the doctrine’s core burden-sharing principle during his visit to Guam.
Richard Nixon: The 37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. Nixon announced the principle that bears his name and made it part of his foreign policy.
South Vietnam: The state that existed in southern Vietnam from 1955 until its fall in 1975. South Vietnam was the principal ally expected to assume more combat responsibility under Vietnamization.
Eisenhower Doctrine: A 1957 U.S. policy offering economic and military aid, including possible armed force, to Middle Eastern states resisting communist aggression. It authorized a more explicit U.S. intervention role in the region than the Nixon Doctrine’s emphasis on allied manpower.
Vietnamization: The U.S. policy of transferring combat responsibilities in the Vietnam War to South Vietnamese forces. It applied the doctrine by shifting battlefield duties to an ally while U.S. support continued.
Vietnam War: A conflict from 1955 to 1975 involving North and South Vietnam and major foreign powers, including the United States. The costs of U.S. involvement in Vietnam drove the search for a policy relying more on allied forces.
Iran under the Pahlavi dynasty: Iran under the rule of the Pahlavi shahs, from 1925 until the 1979 revolution. Nixon’s administration treated Iran as a regional partner able to shoulder greater defense responsibilities.
Truman Doctrine: A 1947 U.S. policy pledging support to countries resisting subjugation by armed minorities or outside pressures. Its early containment commitments relied on American support for vulnerable states, before Nixon’s push for greater allied self-reliance.
Foreign internal defense: A military strategy that helps another country build capacity to protect itself against internal threats. Training and assistance offered a way to support allies without supplying most of their combat manpower.
Guam: A U.S. island territory in the western Pacific and a major strategic military hub. Nixon articulated the doctrine during a 1969 stop on Guam.
