Nizari Ismaili state

A network of Nizari Ismaili strongholds in Iran and Syria, governed by the community’s imams from the late eleventh century until the Mongol and Mamluk conquests.

Alamut Castle: A mountain fortress in northern Iran that became the principal seat of Nizari rule. It served as the state’s main stronghold and political center.
Nizari Ismailism: A branch of Ismaili Islam whose adherents recognize the Nizari line of imams. The state was the political expression of this community and its imam-centered allegiance.
Rashid al-Din Sinan: A Nizari leader in Syria during the twelfth century, known to Crusader sources as the Old Man of the Mountain. He led the Syrian branch while maintaining its distinct role within the wider Nizari network.
Mongol conquest of Alamut: The Mongol campaign that captured Alamut and other Iranian Nizari strongholds in 1256. It ended the state’s territorial rule in Iran.
Lambsar Castle: A major Nizari fortress in the western Alborz mountains of Iran. Its defenses and regional command illustrate how authority extended beyond Alamut.
Nizar ibn al-Mustansir: An Fatimid prince whose claim to the caliphate gave his name to the Nizari branch. His succession claim became the defining allegiance behind the state’s emergence.
Hasan II (Nizari imam): A Nizari imam who proclaimed the resurrection, or qiyama, at Alamut in 1164. His proclamation transformed the community’s religious and political self-understanding.
Mamluk Sultanate: A sultanate based in Egypt and Syria that ruled from 1250 to 1517. Mamluk campaigns later extinguished the remaining Nizari strongholds in Syria.
Masyaf Castle: A Nizari fortress in western Syria associated with the community’s Syrian branch. It anchored Nizari power in Syria, far from the Iranian center.
Hasan-i Sabbah: A Persian Nizari leader who established the movement’s base at Alamut in 1090. He organized the Iranian strongholds and helped establish the state’s early structure.
