Noble gas compound

A chemical compound containing at least one noble-gas element. Examples include xenon difluoride and krypton fluoride.

Xenon difluoride: A linear molecule composed of one xenon atom bonded to two fluorine atoms. Its bonding illustrates how xenon forms a stable compound with fluorine.
Neil Bartlett: An English chemist who prepared the first reported noble-gas compound in 1962. His work initiated the modern experimental chemistry of noble gases.
Xenon difluoride etching: A dry etching process that uses xenon difluoride gas to remove silicon selectively. It is a practical use of a noble-gas compound in microfabrication.
Helium: The lightest noble gas, with two electrons filling its only electron shell. Its very high ionization energy and small size make ordinary chemical bonding exceptionally difficult.
Noble gas hydride: A compound containing a bond between hydrogen and a noble-gas element. Hydrides test whether noble gases can form bonds beyond their well-known fluorides.
Xenon tetrafluoride: A square-planar molecule containing one xenon atom and four fluorine atoms. Its shape and bonding show how xenon supports multiple bonds to fluorine.
Xenon hexafluoroplatinate: A compound formed by reacting xenon with platinum hexafluoride, commonly represented as Xe+[PtF6]−. Bartlett's synthesis of this material first demonstrated that xenon could react chemically.
Krypton difluoride: A highly reactive krypton compound with formula KrF2. Its strong oxidizing behavior makes it useful in specialized fluorination chemistry.
Neon: A noble gas with atomic number 10 and a filled second electron shell. No stable conventional neutral neon compounds are known, unlike those of xenon.
Helium compounds: Chemical species containing helium, including compounds stabilized under unusual conditions. Helium compounds probe how pressure or ionic environments can overcome helium's resistance to bonding.
