Noetherian ring

A ring in which every ascending chain of ideals eventually stabilizes. Equivalently, every ideal is finitely generated.

Ring (mathematics): An algebraic structure with addition and multiplication, where addition forms an abelian group and multiplication is associative. Noetherianity is a finiteness property of rings, defined through their ideals.
Hilbert basis theorem: The theorem that a polynomial ring over a Noetherian ring is Noetherian. It shows that adjoining a polynomial variable preserves the finiteness condition.
Hilbert's Nullstellensatz: A theorem connecting ideals in polynomial rings over algebraically closed fields with algebraic sets. Noetherian polynomial rings support the finite ideal structure used in its algebraic-geometric setting.
Emmy Noether: A German mathematician whose work transformed abstract algebra and theoretical physics. The condition bears her name and reflects her influence on modern ideal theory.
Ideal (ring theory): An additive subgroup of a ring that absorbs multiplication by every ring element. Ascending chains of these substructures define the ring's Noetherian property.

Quotient ring: A ring formed by identifying elements whose difference lies in a chosen ideal. Every quotient of a Noetherian ring remains Noetherian.
