Noise-induced hearing loss

Noise-induced hearing loss is damage to the auditory system caused by intense sound exposure, either from a single acoustic event or repeated exposure over time.

Cochlea: The spiral-shaped inner-ear organ that converts sound vibrations into neural signals. Its sensory structures bear the mechanical and metabolic stress of intense sound.
Occupational hearing loss: Hearing impairment caused or worsened by hazardous sound exposure at work. Workplace noise is a major preventable source of cumulative auditory injury.
Tinnitus: The perception of sound, such as ringing, without an external acoustic source. It commonly accompanies noise-related ear injury, though it can occur independently.
Presbycusis: Age-related, usually gradual hearing loss involving changes in the auditory system. It can resemble noise damage but arises chiefly with aging and often overlaps with it.
Hair cell: A sensory cell that converts mechanical movement into electrical signals in the inner ear. Damage to cochlear hair cells is a major source of permanent hearing loss.
Personal protective equipment: Wearable equipment used to reduce exposure to workplace or environmental hazards. Earplugs and earmuffs reduce sound reaching the auditory system when fitted and used properly.
Hyperacusis: Reduced tolerance of ordinary sounds, which may seem excessively loud or uncomfortable. Some people develop sound intolerance alongside noise-related auditory symptoms.
Conductive hearing loss: Hearing loss caused by impaired sound conduction through the outer or middle ear. Noise-induced loss usually affects inner-ear structures rather than sound transmission through the ear.
Synaptopathy: Damage to synapses connecting sensory cells with neurons, which can impair signal transmission. Noise can disrupt these connections even when standard hearing thresholds recover.
Noise-induced hearing loss in children: Noise-related auditory damage occurring during childhood or adolescence. Recreational sound exposure can threaten hearing before occupational risks begin.
