Nomenklatura

The Soviet Communist Party’s system of approved lists and appointments for important government, economic, military, and cultural posts. It also denoted the officials who held those positions.

Nomenklatura list: A roster of posts or candidates reserved for appointment or approval by a Communist Party committee. These lists defined which appointments party committees controlled.
Bolshevik Revolution: The 1917 revolution in Russia that brought the Bolsheviks to power and began Soviet rule. The new regime created the administrative structures that later used nomenklatura appointments.
Mikhail Suslov: A senior Soviet Communist Party official who shaped ideological policy under several Soviet leaders. His long tenure illustrates the security of senior party careers.
