Nominalization

Nominalization is the formation of a noun from another word or phrase, or the use of a word or phrase as a noun. It can package actions, qualities, or propositions as entities in a sentence.

Derivational morphology: The formation of new words by adding affixes or changing a word’s form. Suffixes such as -tion and -ness form nouns from verbs and adjectives.
Noun: A word class whose members commonly name entities and can serve as sentence subjects or objects. Nominalization produces forms that behave as nouns or occupy noun-like positions.
Agent nominalization: A noun derived from a verb that names the person or thing performing its action. Forms such as “driver” nominalize an action by naming its agent.
Verbalization: The formation or use of a verb from another word or phrase. Verbalization moves toward verb forms, the opposite direction from noun formation.
Deverbal noun: A noun formed from a verb, often naming its action, result, or agent. Deverbal nouns are a central product of word-forming nominalization.
Verb: A word class whose members commonly express actions, events, states, or relations. Verbs are frequent sources for nouns such as “destruction” and “arrival.”
Event nominalization: A noun that presents an event or action as a thing or concept. Forms such as “the examination of the samples” package an action into a noun phrase.
Finite verb: A verb marked for tense or agreement that can serve as the predicate of a clause. A finite clause often states an event directly where nominalization packages it as a noun.
Gerund: A verb form ending in -ing that functions as a noun in English. In English, an -ing form can name an activity while retaining some verbal behavior.
Adjective: A word class whose members commonly attribute properties to nouns. Adjectives can become nouns, as in “the poor” or “kindness.”
