Non-binary

Non-binary is a gender identity that is not exclusively male or female. It includes identities that may be between, beyond, or independent of those categories.

Gender identity: A person’s internal sense of their own gender, which may or may not match sex assigned at birth. Non-binary is one way a person’s gender identity can be defined.
Sex assigned at birth: The classification, usually male or female, recorded for an infant based on observed sex characteristics. It is distinct from gender identity and does not determine whether someone is non-binary.
Singular they: The use of they as a singular pronoun for a person whose gender is unknown or who uses they pronouns. It is one widely used way to refer to some non-binary people.
Agender: A gender identity characterized by having no gender or by experiencing gender as absent. Agender is one specific identity sometimes included under the non-binary umbrella.
Non-binary visibility: The public presence and recognition of non-binary people and identities. Visibility can broaden understanding while also exposing people to scrutiny.
Gender binary: A framework that classifies gender exclusively as male or female. Non-binary identity challenges the assumption that gender has only two categories.
Cisgender: Describes a person whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. The term contrasts with many, though not all, non-binary people’s experiences.
Gender-neutral language: Language that avoids specifying or privileging a particular gender. It can make communication more inclusive of non-binary people.
Genderfluid: A gender identity that changes over time or across circumstances. Genderfluid is another identity that may fall under the non-binary umbrella.
Misgendering: Referring to someone using language that does not match their gender identity. Non-binary people may be misgendered when others assume everyone is a man or woman.
