Non-coding RNA

Non-coding RNA is RNA that is not translated into protein. Its molecules can regulate gene expression, catalyze reactions, or contribute to cellular structures.

RNA: RNA is a nucleic acid made of ribonucleotides that carries information and performs structural, catalytic, and regulatory roles. Non-coding RNA belongs to the broader family of RNA molecules.
Ribosomal RNA: Ribosomal RNA is the RNA component of ribosomes and contributes to their structure and catalytic activity. It shows how non-coding RNA can form the core of the protein-making machinery.
RNA interference: RNA interference is sequence-specific gene silencing mediated by small RNAs and protein complexes. It is a major experimental and natural pathway through which non-coding RNAs suppress genes.
Francis Crick: Francis Crick was a British molecular biologist who helped establish DNA structure and the central dogma of molecular biology. The early framework emphasizing information flow made RNA’s non-messenger roles especially striking.
RNA world hypothesis: The RNA world hypothesis proposes that early life relied on RNA for both information storage and catalysis. Ribozymes support the possibility that RNA once combined roles now divided between DNA and proteins.
Transcription: Transcription is the synthesis of RNA from a DNA template by RNA polymerase. Non-coding RNAs begin as transcripts, even though they are not translated.
Transfer RNA: Transfer RNA is an adaptor molecule that carries an amino acid and matches it to a codon during translation. Its function depends on RNA structure, not translation of its own sequence.
Antisense oligonucleotide: An antisense oligonucleotide is a short synthetic nucleic acid designed to bind a chosen RNA sequence. Therapeutic antisense molecules exploit base pairing to alter RNA processing or stability.
Central dogma of molecular biology: The central dogma describes the directional transfer of sequence information among DNA, RNA, and protein. Non-coding RNAs expanded understanding of RNA function without overturning the core information-flow principle.
Epigenetics: Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes in gene activity that do not alter DNA sequence. Some non-coding RNAs help recruit or guide chromatin regulators that influence gene activity.
