Knowra Non-commissioned officer Non-commissioned officer A non-commissioned officer is an enlisted service member appointed to a leadership rank without receiving a commission from the state. NCOs lead personnel and carry out orders within a military chain of command.
Military chain of command : The formal hierarchy through which military authority and orders pass. NCOs occupy leadership positions within this hierarchy and relay orders between officers and enlisted personnel.
Enlisted personnel : Military members who serve outside the commissioned officer corps. NCOs are enlisted personnel who have advanced into leadership ranks.
Small-unit leadership : The direction and coordination of a military team or unit at close range. NCOs often provide immediate leadership to squads, sections, and similar small units.
Officer : A person holding a position of authority in an organization or armed force. In military usage, the broad officer category includes commissioned officers and, in some systems, warrant officers—not NCOs.

Military logistics : The planning and provision of personnel, equipment, supplies, and services for military operations. NCOs help track equipment and supplies and keep unit resources ready for use.
Private (rank) : A basic enlisted rank in several armed forces. Privates are generally junior enlisted members, unlike NCOs appointed to leadership ranks.
Continental Army : The army formed by the thirteen American colonies during the American Revolutionary War. Its organization included NCO ranks that contributed to the developing United States Army system.
