Non-objective art

Non-objective art uses forms, colors, lines, and materials without depicting recognizable objects from the visible world. Its subject is the visual work itself rather than a represented scene or thing.

Abstract art: Art that departs from realistic depiction by simplifying, distorting, or omitting recognizable forms. Non-objective art is an especially complete departure from recognizable representation.
Wassily Kandinsky: A Russian-born painter and theorist associated with the development of abstract art. His early abstract paintings helped establish art without recognizable subjects.
Abstract expressionism: A postwar art movement associated with large-scale abstraction and expressive or gestural painting. Some of its artists treated paint and gesture as subjects in their own right.
Representational art: Art that depicts recognizable people, places, objects, or events. It retains visible-world subjects that non-objective art omits.
Geometric abstraction: Abstract art built from geometric shapes, lines, and ordered relationships. Its forms often provide non-objective art with a precise visual vocabulary.
Kazimir Malevich: A Russian avant-garde artist who founded Suprematism, an art of basic geometric forms. His Suprematist works pursued non-objective forms with unusual clarity.
Action painting: A style of painting that emphasizes spontaneous gestures and the physical act of applying paint. It turns the making of a non-objective image into part of its content.
Figurative art: Art that represents recognizable human or animal figures, often with varying degrees of realism. Recognizable figures make figurative art distinct from non-objective work.
Color field painting: Painting organized around broad areas of color rather than distinct figures or objects. Large color areas can carry a work without depicting anything.
Suprematism: An art movement founded by Kazimir Malevich that emphasized basic geometric forms and pure feeling. It explicitly sought art independent of depicted objects.
