Nonlinear dynamics

Nonlinear dynamics studies how systems evolve when their governing equations are nonlinear, so effects need not scale proportionally with causes and small changes can produce large or unexpected outcomes.

Feedback: A process in which a system's output influences its later input or behavior. Feedback can amplify or damp changes, shaping a nonlinear system's evolution.
Dynamical system: A system whose state changes over time according to a specified rule. Nonlinear dynamics is a branch of the broader study of evolving systems.
Logistic map: A discrete-time model of population growth defined by a quadratic recurrence. Its parameter changes demonstrate period doubling and chaotic behavior in a compact model.
Chaos theory: The study of deterministic systems with aperiodic behavior and sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Chaos is a distinctive regime found within nonlinear dynamical systems.
Turbulence: Irregular fluid motion characterized by fluctuating velocities across interacting scales. Nonlinear fluid equations help account for turbulence's instabilities and interacting scales.
Bifurcation theory: The study of qualitative changes in a system's behavior as parameters vary. Parameter shifts can abruptly change the number or stability of a system's states.
Differential equation: An equation relating a function to one or more of its derivatives. Differential equations commonly specify the evolution laws of continuous-time systems.
Lorenz system: A three-variable system of differential equations originally developed to model atmospheric convection. Its trajectories became a landmark example of deterministic chaos.
Fractal: A geometric structure with detail or complexity across multiple scales. Fractal patterns often appear in the geometry of nonlinear attractors and bifurcations.
Population dynamics: The study of how population sizes and structures change over time. Nonlinear growth, competition, and feedback shape population trajectories.
