Nonlinear optics

Nonlinear optics studies how light interacts with matter when the material’s response depends nonlinearly on the optical field, enabling effects such as frequency conversion and intensity-dependent refraction.

Nonlinear polarization: A material polarization that depends nonlinearly on the applied electric field. Its higher-order terms generate the frequency mixing that defines nonlinear optical response.
Maxwell's equations: The equations that describe how electric and magnetic fields are generated and evolve. They connect material polarization to the propagation of optical fields.
Optical parametric amplification: A process that amplifies a signal wave by transferring energy from a pump through a nonlinear medium. It uses parametric frequency mixing to amplify tunable optical signals.
Peter Franken: An American physicist who led the first experimental observation of second-harmonic generation in 1961. His experiment provided the first direct demonstration of nonlinear optical frequency conversion.
Centrosymmetric material: A material whose structure is unchanged by inversion through a center point. Bulk electric-dipole second-order effects vanish in such materials, unlike in non-centrosymmetric media.
Second-harmonic generation: A process in which two photons at one frequency combine to produce a photon at twice that frequency. It is a direct example of a second-order polarization creating a new optical frequency.
Electric dipole approximation: An approximation treating a light-driven system as small enough for its field to be spatially uniform. It underlies the standard expansion of optical polarization in powers of the field.
Supercontinuum generation: The broadening of a narrow optical spectrum into a wide continuum through nonlinear propagation. Several nonlinear effects combine to create broadband light from short pulses.
Second-harmonic generation experiment: The 1961 experiment that observed ultraviolet light produced by ruby-laser illumination of quartz. It marked the experimental beginning of modern nonlinear optics.
Non-centrosymmetric material: A material whose structure lacks inversion symmetry. Its symmetry permits bulk second-order effects such as electric-dipole second-harmonic generation.
