Nordic Council

The Nordic Council is an interparliamentary body that promotes cooperation among Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland.

Nordic Council of Ministers: An intergovernmental body through which Nordic governments coordinate policy and regional cooperation. It works alongside the Council, translating political cooperation into government-level coordination.
Nordic passport union: An arrangement among Nordic countries that removed passport controls for travel between them. It exemplifies cross-border cooperation that developed alongside the Council’s institutions.
Nordic Council President: The elected chair who leads the Nordic Council for a one-year term. The rotating presidency gives each national delegation a role in setting the Council’s agenda.
European Council: The institution that defines the European Union’s general political direction and priorities. Unlike this EU institution, the Nordic Council is a regional parliamentary cooperation body without equivalent executive authority.
Nordic Council Presidium: The Nordic Council’s executive body, responsible for directing its work between sessions. It guides the Council’s priorities and oversees its ongoing activities.
Treaty of Helsinki: The 1962 agreement that established a framework for official Nordic cooperation. It formalized cooperation after the Council’s creation and remains its foundational treaty.
Nordic Council Secretariat: The administrative office supporting the Nordic Council’s work and its national delegations. It enables representatives from several countries and territories to conduct continuous parliamentary cooperation.
Council of the European Union: The EU institution where national ministers negotiate and adopt legislation with the European Parliament. Its legislative powers contrast with the Nordic Council’s role in recommendations and political debate.
Nordic Council committees: Specialized bodies that prepare proposals and examine issues for the Nordic Council. Much of the Council’s policy work is developed through these committees.
Nordic Council Literary Prize: An annual literary award established by the Nordic Council in 1962. The prize shows how the Council’s work extends beyond parliamentary affairs into shared culture.
