Nordic model

A family of political economies in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden combining extensive welfare states, coordinated labor relations, and market economies.

Universalism: A principle of providing public services or benefits to everyone in a defined population, rather than only to the poor. Universal access to services and benefits is a hallmark of Nordic welfare provision.
Wage compression: A relatively narrow spread of wages across workers compared with more unequal wage structures. Coordinated bargaining has historically limited wage differences across firms and occupations.
September Compromise: A 1899 agreement between Danish employers and workers’ organizations that recognized employers’ managerial authority and workers’ right to organize. It established an early framework for negotiated labor relations in Denmark.
Liberal welfare regime: A welfare-state type relying more heavily on means-tested assistance and market provision than universal public programs. It contrasts with the Nordic emphasis on broad public services and social rights.
Income inequality: The extent to which income is distributed unevenly among people or households. Nordic countries have generally combined market economies with comparatively low income inequality.
Collective bargaining: Negotiation between employers and workers, usually represented by unions, over employment conditions. Negotiated wages and conditions coordinate much of Nordic labor-market governance.
Unemployment insurance: A public or collectively organized system that replaces part of a worker’s income during unemployment. Income support cushions job loss while workers seek new employment.
Saltsjöbaden Agreement: A 1938 agreement between Swedish employers and trade unions establishing procedures for resolving labor disputes. It became a landmark of Sweden’s cooperative industrial-relations tradition.
Conservative welfare regime: A welfare-state type organized largely around employment status, social insurance, and the preservation of occupational distinctions. Its status-linked benefits differ from Nordic universalist ambitions.
Gender equality: Equal rights, opportunities, and treatment across genders. Public childcare, parental leave, and employment policy have supported high female labor-force participation.
