Norman conquest of southern Italy

The eleventh- and twelfth-century expansion of Norman powers across southern Italy, culminating in Roger II’s establishment of the Kingdom of Sicily in 1130.

Battle of Civitate: A 1053 battle in which Normans defeated a papal-led coalition in southern Italy. The victory strengthened Norman control and helped secure Pope Leo IX’s later accommodation with them.
Robert Guiscard: A Norman duke who conquered much of southern Italy and campaigned against Byzantine rule in the Balkans. His campaigns established the principal mainland power that Roger II later inherited.
