Knowra Norrland Norrland Norrland is the northernmost of Sweden’s three traditional lands, covering roughly three-fifths of the country. It comprises nine counties and includes much of Sweden’s mountains, forests, and mining districts.
Norrbotten County : The northernmost county of Sweden, bordering Finland and Norway. It occupies Norrland’s far north and contains much of the region’s Arctic landscape.
Kiruna : A town in northern Sweden known for its iron-ore mine and ongoing relocation of its center. Its mine and relocation make it a prominent example of resource-driven change in Norrland.
Lands of Sweden : The three traditional regions—Götaland, Svealand, and Norrland—into which Sweden is commonly divided. Norrland is one of these long-standing territorial divisions.
Iron ore in Sweden : Iron-bearing rock mined in Sweden, especially in the northern districts around Kiruna and Malmberget. Its extraction has shaped Norrland’s industry, towns, and transport links.
Jämtland County : A county in western central Sweden, bordering Norway. Its mountain and inland districts represent Norrland’s western interior.
LKAB : A Swedish state-owned mining company that produces iron ore in Kiruna and Malmberget. Its operations anchor Norrland’s major iron-ore districts.
Historical provinces of Sweden : The traditional Swedish provinces, or landskap, whose identities persist despite lacking administrative authority. Their boundaries and identities underpin Norrland’s traditional regional geography.
Malmbanan : A railway in northern Sweden and Norway that carries iron ore from inland mines to coastal ports. It connects Norrland’s mining centers with export routes on the Norwegian and Swedish coasts.
Västernorrland County : A county on Sweden’s northeastern coast, centered on the lower Gulf of Bothnia. Its coastal settlements and river valleys show Norrland’s eastern character.
Hydropower in Sweden : Electricity generation in Sweden using energy from flowing or falling water. Norrland’s rivers support a large share of the country’s hydropower production.
