Norte Chico civilization

A complex society that arose in Peru’s Supe Valley region during the third millennium BCE, known for monumental architecture and large planned settlements.

Caral: An ancient urban center in Peru’s Supe Valley, occupied during the third millennium BCE. Its monumental core is the civilization’s best-known settlement.
Irrigation agriculture: Crop cultivation that supplies water through channels or other managed systems. Canal-based farming supported settlement in the dry Supe Valley.
Radiocarbon dating: A method for estimating the age of organic materials by measuring radioactive carbon decay. It established the antiquity of construction at Supe Valley sites.

Agricultural surplus: Food produced beyond immediate consumption and retained for later use or exchange. Surplus crops could help provision people gathered for construction and ceremonies.
