North American P-51 Mustang

The North American P-51 Mustang was an American single-seat fighter aircraft developed during World War II. Its long range and strong high-altitude performance made it especially valuable for escorting Allied bombers.

Packard V-1650 Merlin: An American-built version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin liquid-cooled V-12 aircraft engine. This engine transformed the Mustang’s high-altitude performance compared with its original Allison-powered versions.

Operation Bodenplatte: A German air offensive against Allied airfields in the Low Countries and France on January 1, 1945. Mustangs destroyed on Allied airfields during this attack illustrate the vulnerability of even dominant air forces on the ground.
