North Aral Sea

The northern basin of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan, partly restored after the Kok-Aral Dam separated it from the shrinking southern basin.

Syr Darya: A major Central Asian river that flows into the North Aral Sea. Its inflow replenishes the basin and supports the dam-enabled recovery.
Soviet irrigation projects: Large-scale irrigation schemes developed in the Soviet Union, especially in Central Asia. Diversions for these projects sharply reduced the rivers feeding the Aral Sea.
Aral Sea fishing industry: Commercial fishing and fish processing once widespread around the Aral Sea. Rising water and fish stocks helped revive fisheries near the northern basin.

Berg Strait: A narrow channel connecting the North Aral Sea with the larger southern basin. Before the dam, this connection allowed water to escape southward.
Syr Darya irrigation: The diversion of Syr Darya water to irrigate farms in Central Asia. Reduced river flows contributed directly to the North Aral Sea's historic retreat.
