Knowra North Asia North Asia North Asia is the northern part of Asia, generally encompassing Siberia and the Russian Far East within Russia. Its vast territory extends from the Ural region to the Pacific coast.
Siberia : A vast region of northern Asia, largely within Russia, extending east from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific watershed. The largest and most commonly recognized region within North Asia.
Subarctic climate : A climate with long, very cold winters and short, cool summers. It characterizes broad areas of the region and constrains settlement and agriculture.
Yermak Timofeyevich : A Cossack leader whose late-sixteenth-century campaign helped begin Russian expansion into Siberia. His campaign opened a major phase of west-to-east conquest across the region.
West Siberian petroleum basin : A major oil- and gas-producing region in western Siberia. Its hydrocarbon fields underpin much of Russia’s energy production and exports.
Central Asia : The landlocked region of Asia commonly encompassing Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Its southern location and historical connections distinguish it from North Asia.
Russian Far East : The easternmost part of Russia, bordering the Pacific Ocean and neighboring countries of East Asia. This Pacific-facing region forms North Asia’s eastern edge.
Arctic climate : A climate with very cold conditions, brief summers, and little or no tree growth. It dominates North Asia’s far northern coast and islands.
Russian conquest of Siberia : The expansion of Russian rule across Siberia from the late sixteenth century onward. It established the political framework that brought most of North Asia under Russian control.
Norilsk : A Russian city above the Arctic Circle and a major center of nickel and palladium mining. Its mines show the industrial value and environmental costs of remote northern resources.
East Asia : A region of Asia commonly encompassing China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and Mongolia. Its denser population and distinct regional history contrast with North Asia’s vast northern expanse.
