North Atlantic Treaty

The 1949 agreement that established the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and committed its parties to collective defense, including mutual assistance after an armed attack.

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty: The treaty’s clause stating that an armed attack against one or more parties in Europe or North America is considered an attack against them all. This clause gives the treaty’s collective-defense commitment its operative form.
