North Atlantic Treaty Organization

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance of European and North American states founded in 1949. Its members commit to collective defense under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

Military neutrality: A state policy of avoiding participation in military alliances or armed conflicts, subject to each country’s laws and commitments. Neutrality contrasts with NATO membership’s mutual-defense obligations.
Transatlantic relations: Political, economic, and security relations between Europe and North America, especially the United States and Europe. NATO has anchored the military dimension of these relations since 1949.
