North China Plain

A broad alluvial plain in eastern China, built chiefly from sediments deposited by the Yellow River and other rivers. It is one of China’s major agricultural and population regions.

Yellow River: A major river of northern China that flows eastward into the Bohai Sea. Its sediment load has built much of the plain and repeatedly shifted its channels.
River avulsion: The abrupt abandonment of a river channel in favor of a new course across its floodplain. Avulsions repeatedly redirected the Yellow River across the plain.
North China Plain wheat cultivation: The intensive cultivation of winter wheat across the North China Plain. Wheat production is a defining use of the region’s irrigated farmland.
Yellow River course changes: Historical changes in the Yellow River’s channel and outlet across northern China. Repeated course shifts redistributed sediment across different parts of the plain.
